In honor of the extremely horribly cast and all around disappointing live action Avatar movie this Science Experiment is dedicated to water benders! This experiment is dedicating to finding out if one can really bend water. We are going to explore if we can bend water, and if so what scientific properties make this possible.

SUPPLIES

 

  • 3 Regular size balloons
  • Running water from a faucet in your home

 

QUESTIONS TO ASK

 

  • How do you know a reaction is forming/happening?
  • How is static electricity made within this chemical reaction?
  • Can any other items cause the same chemical reaction within the confines of the experiment?

Science
  Before you start your experiment discuss and learn about water and how it can possibly respond to different reactions. What kind of reactions can form it? Can water be harmful in certain forms? Does static electricity commonly come into contact with water in your everyday life?

 

Technology – Have your little ones research these terms online : neutrons, protons, electrons, negative charge, positive charge, and static electricity. 

 

EngineeringExperiment using different temperatures of water while conducting the experiment. Does this change the reaction? What will happen if you use a comb instead of balloons? Will the result be the same if you use combs made from different materials?

 

Art – Have your Littles’ make molecule chains of water using clay or play-doh. If you don’t have clay or play-doh have them use Legos to build their molecule chains.

 

MathIf you are able to bend the water long how long does the chemical reaction take to bend the water? Will changing the temperature of the water change the reaction and the time it takes for the water to bend?  

 

 




First, have your Little One’s inflate the balloons.


Now, have them turn on the faucet so that a small stream of cool water flows.


Next, they need to hold the inflated balloons CLOSE to the faucet withOUT it touching the water and notice if the water changes direction (it shouldn’t). Have them do this one at a time.


Then have them rub the balloons against each other’s hair for about 10-20 seconds each.


Finally, have them place the balloons one at a time next to the running water and watch what happens.
