Science Experiment – Emulsifier – Ms. Egg

Today’s science experiment was about molecules that were opposites and how to combine them. We used oil and water to show what happens when molecules are not attracted. Then we used other objects to check what would be an emulsifier. An emulsifier is something that allows molecules to bond that are normally not able to mix.

I make an effort to do a different science experiment 7 days a week. It doesn’t always go as planned and sometimes the experiments just do NOT work out but we have made some pretty amazing memories!

Before we got started I talked to the Little’s about what an emulsifier is and gave them examples. I told them that sometimes Sister Bear is an emulsifier between Josie Cat and Brother Bear. Then I asked them to tell me what that means to them. All three were able to explain it to me in terms they understood so they started the experiment with a general idea of what it meant and what the experiment was about!

Directions

First, add water to your mason jar.

Now add the vegetable oil to the jar.

Next add your food color (no more than 3 drops-I use gel food coloring) and stir in order to mix.

Put your top on tightly and shake. Make sure the jar is not greasy or it will go flying out of you little ones hands!!! ??? As it starts to settle have an open dialogue about what they think will happen.

After the oil and water separate and settle again open the top and crack the egg and put inside of each of your jars. I crack Brother Bear’s egg and put it in his jar since he is allergic to eggs. If I let him do it himself then he would end up rubbing his eggs or somehow putting his hands in his mouth… ???. Sister Bear and Josie Cat had to use their mixing sticks to breaks their egg yolks open since their jars were to greasy to shake with the force they needed to mix it properly.

Finally, if you have any extra time experiment and see if any other household products act like emulsifiers between oil and water! We tried hair gel and dish soap.

Equipment

  • Mason Jar
  • Mixing Stick (or whatever you have!)

Materials

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 egg

Additional Additives (if you have extra)

  • 1 cup dish soap
  • 1 cup laundry soap
  • 1 cup hair gel
  • 1 cup body wash

Instructions

  • Now add the vegetable oil to the jar.
  • Next add your food color (no more than 3 drops-I use gel food coloring) and stir in order to mix.
  • Put your top on tightly and shake. Make sure the jar is not greasy or it will go flying out of you little ones hands!!! ??? As it starts to settle have an open dialogue about what they think will happen.
  • After the oil and water separate and settle again open the top and crack the egg and put inside of each of your jars. Shake carefully and discuss!
  • Finally, if you have any extra time experiment and see if any other household products act like emulsifiers between oil and water! We tried hair gel and dish soap.

Notes

  • I buy the cheapest vegetable oil so I can use it for science experiments!!!
  • Do NOT forget to start fresh with each new additional POSSIBLE emulsifier!!!
  • Do NOT be afraid to TRY any household item that you and your Littles’ can imagine, as an emulsifier, if your family can spare it!!!
  • If you are low on vegetable oil just remember the ratio is 1:1 so it does NOT need to be a full cup of vegetable oil!
